Holidaying in a wig doesn't have to be a hassle.

"It was June, and the world smelled of roses. The sunshine was like powdered gold over the grassy hillside."

As the weather warms up and beach days beckon, many wig wearers find themselves facing a unique challenge: how to protect their wigs from the elements while still enjoying the sun, sand, and surf. Whether you're lounging by the shore or taking a dip in the ocean, here are some tips to keep your wig looking fabulous all summer long.

1. Choose the Right Wig:

Opt for a wig that is specifically designed for outdoor wear. Look for wigs made from heat-resistant synthetic fibers or human hair, as these materials are more durable and can better withstand the effects of sun, saltwater, and sand.

Remember to protect human hair wigs and toppers by wearing a hat or using a UV protection spray to help slow down colour fade.

You may even want to consider a synthetic wig for swimming as it dries quickly and if a mishap does happen you'll not be too much out of pocket.

2. Secure Your Wig:

Before heading to the beach, make sure your wig is securely attached. Use wig clips, tape, or adhesive to keep it in place, especially if you plan on swimming or participating in water activities. You can also consider wearing a swim cap over your wig for added protection.

My favourite way to secure my wig is to wear a grip band under it. It helps me to keep cool, absorbs any head sweat and stops my wig from moving around on my head which, in turn, keeps me secure and comfortable all day long.

When you're on your holidays you want to be enjoying yourself and not worrying about wig security!

3. Protect from Sun Exposure:

Just like natural hair, wigs can be damaged by prolonged exposure to the sun's UV rays. To prevent fading and drying out, wear a wide-brimmed hat or scarf to shield your wig from direct sunlight. Additionally, you can use a UV protection spray specifically formulated for wigs to provide an extra layer of defense.

Another option is to leave the wig in the hotel room and pop on some cute headwear. I know this may seem a little scary if you're not used to going wig-free, but remember that one of the perks of being on holiday is that no one knows you so you kinda' get to reinvent yourself and do as you please!

4. Rinse After Swimming:

If you take a dip in the ocean or pool, it's essential to rinse your human hair wig immediately afterward to remove saltwater, chlorine, and other impurities. Use lukewarm water and a mild shampoo to gently cleanse the wig, then allow it to air dry completely before styling.

Sound like to much hassle? Opt for a synthetic or heat resistant wig. These wigs are amazing for holidays as they dry fast, revert back to their original style without you having to so much as look at a hair dryer of pair of hair straighteners and they are more light-weight than human hair wigs generally.

5. Minimize Friction and Tangling:

Sand and wind can cause friction and tangling, leading to knots and matting in your wig. To prevent this, avoid rubbing your wig against rough surfaces and secure it in a loose braid or ponytail to minimise tangling. You can also use a leave-in conditioner or detangling spray to keep the fibers smooth and manageable.

6. Store Properly:

When you're not wearing your wig, store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and humidity. Invest in a wig stand or mannequin head to help maintain its shape and prevent it from getting crushed or tangled.

7. Regular Maintenance:

Lastly, don't forget to schedule regular maintenance for your wig, especially if you're wearing it frequently during the summer months. Brush it gently with a wig brush or wide-tooth comb to remove tangles, and consider taking it to a professional stylist for periodic deep conditioning treatments.

By following these tips, you can enjoy a day at the beach without worrying about damaging your wig. With the right care and precautions, you can keep your wig looking gorgeous all summer long, no matter how many waves you ride or sandcastles you build.
